Importance of Diversity in the LGBTQ+ Community

If I had focused more on the humanities side of the LGBTQ+ community, I would not have understood what the LGBTQ+ community has gone through. I also think that looking at it through the humanities’ lens would have focused more on what is happening now in the community. I could have focused more on certain aspects within the community such as Drag Queens/Drag Kings. While not completely true, when reading on the humanities lens, it does seem that I may not have learned as much about the community as I had. And understood the importance of bias to the community. While I still would have gotten bias from the humanities lens it would not have been as touching as the history lens.

While critically analyzing in this class, it opened my eyes up. I never realized how important it is to have diversity with many different ways. When looking at interactions in particular, it made me realize that we may have interacted with people differently based on our own biases. Having an understanding that we are all different would allow us to have better conversations with people. One recent conversation I had with a coworker allowed me to see a difference between what people would expect verse what they see. We were talking about video games and how I play them, and this coworker did not think I played video games. Now, I do not talk too much about the fact that I play video games or well like them all that much, but I have always thought that I fit the stereotype of someone who would play video games. And I guess that showed me that not all gamers look one particular way and that there are others just like me who do not fully match the typical gamer stereotype.

This course opened my eyes up more about diversity. For example, a big thing that bugs me about being a fan of alternative music (such as rock/metal – really bands that could be found on Vans Warped Tour when it was around), is that there is not that much diversity when it comes to the scene. This is even the case with popular artists – although popular music has a bit more diversity than the alternative scene. Having diversity would allow for more people to have representation of themselves in different genres. Thus, allowing a bigger fanbase for each genres. And if people learned more about how important diversity is, the entertainment industry would allow for more diversity and cross collaborations. For example, Megan Thee Stallion has a song called Cobra which she eventually made a rock version of with the band Spiritbox. Bringing two worlds together through one song. While, this has happened before, with Jay-Z and Linkin Park, Spiritbox is a female fronted metal band thus it was two powerful women using their voices and not two men.
