While many people are aware of homophobia, people do not realize the risks that come with it. “LGBTQ individuals are at greater risk of suicidality than the general population. One recent study found that LGBTQ suicide risk was three to six times greater than for heterosexual adults across every age group and race/ethnicity category ([66]). This is also true for LGBTQ adolescents, who have long been recognized as having a greater risk of depression and suicidality ([ 2 ]; [12]; [72]).” (Goodman, 2024). Thus, having a deeper and better understanding of homophobia and the risk factors that come with it will allow people in the community to have a better life. Plus, it would allow people to see just how homophobia can be seen or acted out on.
Now when looking at the diversity in LGBTQ+ community, it needs worked on. Although, more than 50% of the LGBTQ+ is white in the U.S., there are still other communities within the LGBTQ+ community. Since the LGBTQ+ community is a worldwide community, using a platform such as TikTok or Instagram and having polls for people to fill out would allow for a wide audience of participants. Looking at the polls on Williams Institute website, it allows for a visual understanding of “More than 20 percent of Generation Z identify as LGBT. Twice as gay as Millennials, five times as gay as Gen X, eight times as gay as Baby Boomers, and twenty-six times as gay as Traditionalists, Gen Z stands as the gayest generation.” (Flynn, 2022 p. 1). These statistics allow people to see the LGBTQ+ population is highest. Thus, if an LGBTQ+ member was looking to move out of a less populated state, they could find a more populated one. It is also interesting to see the genders only have male and female, which excludes the whole non-binary gender identification. It would also be nice to see a more thorough explanation with the genders of male and female, and which ones identify as trans. Another thing that I would not take into consideration is percentage raising children. While this information is important, I do think that there are other more important or more interesting factors of the LGBTQ+ community.
Having all of these statistics, allows us to see just how much the LGBTQ+ community reaches into different cultures. Looking at the statistics again, particularly the characteristics of LGBT people, we see that only 58% of the LGBTQ+ community is white. Now, that number is extremely large and over half of the community, there still are not as many as I thought. I would have said that the LGBTQ+ community was up to 65% white. Seeing that Latino/as make up 21% and Black make up 12% also puts into view just how diverse the community is. Having these numbers and the numbers of Asian, American Indian and Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, and more than one race is important to showcase the individuality that can be found within the community.
