An Analysis and Critique of the Linguistic Features of “Slaughterhouse” and “So What”

3.2 INTENDED MESSAGE

P!nk and Motionless use language in their own ways to reach their audiences. As brought up in the Semantic Perspective, P!nk is much more straightforward within her song using a lot of “I” throughout the song. Although Motionless In White’s listeners may not like the direct message of P!nk’s song, they could still understand the meaning. But there may be a difference between the meaning of “rockstar” between the fandoms. P!nk’s fans might think that she is a rockstar, while Motionless In White’s fans might just consider her a pop star rather than rock star.

3.3 RECOMMENDATIONS TO ALIGN WITH STANDARD LANGUAGE AND LINGUISTIC PRINCIPLES

Although we see the usage of words such as “don’t” or “’em”, if we were to make these two songs with the practices of the Standard Academic English, these words or any slang words would need to be changed. Motionless In White’s lyric, “Kill ’em all, kill ’em all, no successors”, would be changed to, “Kill them all, kill them all, no successors”. And P!nk’s lyric “I don’t know where he went”, would be changed to, “I do not know where he went”.

3.4 CONTRAST OF LANGUAGE ELEMENTS DUE TO THE DIFFERENT TIME PERIODS

When looking at the lyrics of P!nk’s song, there is nothing that stands out to show that it was from the early 2000s. But when you listen to the song, it has that early 2000s pop rock sound that was seen throughout that time. When looking at Motionless In White’s song, it also does not have any obvious ways to tell that it was released in 2022. But if you take into account the lyric “Evade the butcher’s tax, then write us off”, it can have a deeper meaning since it has come out that there have been multiple millionaires who do not do their taxes correctly that have not gotten caught until recently. And one other thing, although in the heavier music field cursing has always been very present, when comparing the two songs P!nk’s song does not use as many swear words as Motionless In White’s song. Although the early 2000s did not have as many taboos with cursing as some other time periods, there was still a taboo with cursing that we do not really see now.

3.5 POSSIBLE ENVIRONMENTAL, HISTORICAL & CULTURAL FACTORS OF THE TIME PERIODS

As stated previously there were no obvious signs of the time period, they still had some. P!nk released “So What” in 2008 and the sound of the song has a similar sound as other songs that are a pop rock sound. At the time of making the song, P!nk had been having marital issues with her husband Carey Hart, they were on a break when the song had been released thus we get the conversational feel of the song.

When Motionless In White released “Slaughterhouse”, we had just gone back to normal from COVID-19 and now we were dealing with the aftermath of Trump’s presidency. One of those includes the overturning of Roe V. Wade which around the time of release, their had been rumors of it being overturned and not long after had been overturned.
