An Analysis and Critique of the Linguistic Features of “Slaughterhouse” and “So What”

2.3 DIALECTS

Since both P!nk and Motionless In White are from eastern Pennyslavania, one might think that there would similar language being used. However, looking at both of the songs, neither really show that they are from Pennyslavania with any of the language used. Yet. the two do use shortened versions of words, which includes “em” for “them”, which can be found in Motionless In White’s lyric “Kill ’em all, kill ’em all, no successors” and P!nk’s usage of words like “gonna” and “wanna” instead of  “going to” and “want to” in the lyrics “And I’m gonna wear it tonight // I wanna get in trouble // I wanna start a fight”. Also, in “So What”, we can see “havin” been used instead of “having” in the lyric “And guess what? I’m havin’ more fun”.

2.4 STYLISTIC ELEMENTS

As stated in Semantic Perspective paragraph, Motionless In White has more of an angry tone to their song. And with that there are many uses of euphemism throughout the song. Including the word “oppressors” which is used in the lyric “Flip the script and oppress the oppressors”, which when looking at the song in a whole, we can assume that the usage of “oppressor” is talking about someone either with power or money that the average American does not have. Yet with P!nk’s lyrics sounding more like conversion between her and the listener, the dialog seems more easy flowing. Unlike Motionless In White, P!nk does not really have euphemisms instead it seems like she is telling you what she is going to do. But when looking at the chorus, specifically the lyrics “And I don’t need you / / And guess what? I’m havin’ more fun / / And now that we’re done / / I’m gonna show you tonight / / I’m alright, I’m just fine / / And you’re a tool”, it seems to be more towards her husband (P!nk). Especially since at the time her and her husband were on a break. Thus, this did affect the song in general helping give the song the conversational tone of someone talking to their friend about breaking up with a partner.

2.5 CRITIQUE OF STANDARD/NONSTANDARD ALIGNMENT WITH LINGUISTIC PRINCIPLES

Both Motionless In White and P!nk both do not use the standard practice used with linguistic principles. Although the listener would not be able to tell that the two are from Pennyslavania, we do see the usage of shortening words that one may associate with someone from Pennyslavania. On top of that, both artist use curse words, Motionless In White using more offensive curse words within the lyrics “You fucking fascist / / You fucking pig” while P!nk only has the lyric “The waiter just took my table / /And gave it to Jessica Simp— (Shit)” even then it’s not truly a part of the song, but more in the background. Which is not a standard in many different settings.
