1.3 3 Morphological and Phonological Perspectives

In “Slaughterhouse”, the main usage of polymorphemic compound word in the title “slaughterhouse”, which has two free morphemes “slaughter” and “house”. When looking at Merriam-Webster Dictionary, “slaughterhouse” is an establishment where animals are butchered (“Slaughterhouse”). There is also the usage of other polymorphemic “packaged” formed with the free morpheme “pack” and the bound suffixes of “-age” and “-ed”. There is also a big usage of the bound suffixes of “-ing” with the free morphemes of “buy” and “bleed”.

In “So What” we see a lot of monomorphemic words in the song. But the polymorphemic words that are in the song are more contractions than anything else. It can be seen in the words of “I’m” formed by the two free morphemes “I” and “am” and “I’ll” formed by the two free morphemes “I” and “will”. As well as “weren’t” being formed by “were” and “not”.

Motionless In White brings the feeling of anger through the usage of alliteration all throughout the song. Within “Slaughterhouse” the usage of the word “die” also adds to the anger that can be heard throughout the song with it being screamed by itself without any other lyric around it. While in the song “So What” the usage of the word “die” comes across as more conversational with it being in a sentence like lyric.
